Chinese ACGN merch falls into a few distinct categories, and knowing the difference protects your wallet and your collection. Here is how we label products and how you can tell them apart.
Three categories
1. Licensed merch - produced with a license from the IP owner (for example, Yuewen-licensed Lord of the Mysteries goods). The highest level of official status.
2. Official retail channel merch - official merchandise sold through official or authorized retail channels, including game official stores and Tmall flagship stores. Still official, sourced directly from the channel.
3. Fan-made merch - premium fan-designed collectibles, inspired by a series but not produced by the IP owner. Quality varies; the best fan-made items are beautiful, but they are not official.
How OwlCache labels products
Every product page states which category the item belongs to. If a product is a random item, we say so. If it is a pre-order, we show the full timeline. No bootlegs, ever - unauthorized replicas are never listed.
Red flags when shopping elsewhere
- Unusually low prices for "official" collector items
- Vague sourcing claims without any channel or license reference
- No clear policy on pre-orders, duties or returns
- Random/blind items that refuse to state the random rule
Why it matters
Collectors care because resale value, quality and ethics all depend on authenticity. Official items support the creators; bootlegs do not. If you ever have questions about a specific product, contact us - we answer honestly.
FAQ
Is all OwlCache merch official? We sell official merch sourced from official or authorized retail channels, plus clearly labeled premium fan-made items. Every product states which.
Can fan-made items be good quality? Yes - many fan-made plushies and stands are excellent. They are simply not official, and we price and label them accordingly.
